Revenge, The newest new book discussion: The Vermont Humanities Council has awarded Quechee Library a grant to originate a new book discussion series with scholar Suzanne Brown on the topic of "Revenge." At both the personal and national levels we continue to decide how to respond to those who have injured us. The series will begin with an ancient classic, the first play in the Orestia trilogy by Aeschylus, and continue with contemporary fiction. Books will be available at the Circulation Desk for borrowing (as well as DVDs of films made from some of the stories). Each discussion will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Thursday, May 1, Agamemnon. The themes of this ancient Greek play resonate today: the cost of avenging a wrong through war and the tension between personal and societal response to injury.
Thursday, June 12, Selected Stories by Andre Dubus & Pray Without Ceasing by Wendell Berry.
Wednesday, July 2, The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks.
Thursday, Aug. 28, Welcome to Hard Times by E.L. Doctorow.
Friends Meeting/Watercolor Demonstration
Wednesday, May 28, 6 p.m. the Friends will hold their annual meeting. All are invited to enjoy refreshments, elect the slate of officers, and then watch and listen as Susan Pecora paints a watercolor of Quechee Main Street. Through a gift from Gladys Sullivan, the Friends are hosting this event which brings Ms. Pecora here to create a painting that will belong to the library and can be used however the Friends wish. Susan Pecora has taught at the Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield, Massachusetts, and instructed a television audience on “Reflections Through Watercolor” on the western New England PBS affiliate.
Concerts, Author Visits, Talks on Science, Public Issues, and other topics of current literary and historical interest, are scheduled intermittently throughout the year. Please click here to email the library if you would like to be on an electronic mailing list to stay informed of upcoming events.
